Jamaica is a beautiful island nation in the Caribbeans, home to about 2.8 million people. However after the harsh economic reforms of trade liberalization, privatization, and deregulation imposed by the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), the economy has been facing mounting levels of debt while supporting a national economy that is highly dependent on imports from foreign countries (in particular the United States).
So come out for a special screening of this illuminating documentary to learn about just one of the many stories of how structural adjustment policies have had a long-lasting, detrimental impact on the social, economic, and political structures of many developing countries today.
This event is sponsored by Cal Berkeley Habitat for Humanity as a fundraising effort for our Collegiate Challenge trip to Jamaica this winter break! A team of 22 volunteers will be spending a week there to do construction and renovation on four different homes in two cities. The families we will be helping are living in homes that are structurally unsafe, lack windows and doors, and have inadequate roofing.
There will be food available for purchase or a suggested fundraising donation box. Your donations will go towards buying materials and tools to help restore the homes. More details coming soon!
